RTB Lineup

The internet was set ablaze yesterday with rumours that Lauryn Hill and A Tribe Called Quest would be performing full album sets at 2010’s Rock the Bells, but you didn’t see that kind of stuff here. Not because I’m above posting rumours, but because I spent most of the afternoon deciding what is my favorite part of a neapolitan ice cream sandwich (it’s a tie between the outside cake parts and the strawberry and chocolate ice cream). Also, I just wasn’t very excited about seeing Lauryn Hill perform without the benefit of a time machine.

The Wu, however, who have stayed pretty much true to their 1993 form, will be headlining, performing their debut album in its entirety. KRS-ONE, Rakim and Slick Rick will be doing full-album sets, and balancing the old with the new, upstarts like Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean and YelaWolf will round out a busy day of performances. The festival starts in the L.A. area on August 21st and the Bay area the 22nd, with an east coast swing the following weekend.

For these full-album performances, how do they handle skits? I mean, all the above artists have been performing songs from their classic albums for years, but will they remember the lyrics from the skits as well Even if they don’t perform them, I hope they’ll consider including skits- maybe put something like this up on the big screens.

Nap Boyz Final

Next week, on Thursday June 3, Joey Boy is bringing his whole Nap Boyz roster of DJs to the Bobby Fresh rooftop (425 S. Mill Ave. at the corner of 5th & Mill in Tempe) to celebrate the release of the collective’s second “Sleep is for Suckaz” mixtape. Made up of Phoenix’s own DJ M2, Los Angeles partyrocker J Scratch and Vegas-based DJ Megaman, the crew doesn’t get together like this very often, so don’t sleep!

It might be 100 degrees today, but the summer doesn’t start until June 10, when Wacka Flocka Flame  comes to PHX Nightclub on June 10. Presented by Bryce Breezee’s Breezeway Entertainment, and hosted by 2 Tone da Supa Star, Summer Kickoff will also feature Tray Gutter and Judge da Boss, with music provided by DJ Essence. Breezeway is also blessing the best dressed female with $1,000 cash. It’s the exact opposite of when I go to a strip club; yeah, the DJ is usually playing “O Let’s Do It”, but it’s the least dressed woman who walks away with my $100.

With Memorial Day coming up, the big Sunday night finale to the three-night weekend will be the New Era Fashion Project at Suite 301, an event bringing together some of the hottest names in our streetwear scene supporting the launch of Epic + BAP Clothing. With DJ Astonish manning the decks (and celebrating his birthday at the same time) alongside DJ Rocko. Following a special VIP reception from 7-9PM, the party jumps off to the general public with a fashion show at 9PM SHARP. No being fashionable late if you want to see this Fashion show featuring product from Bobby Fresh, Epic Kingdom, BAP, Poshadama, Mean Mugg, Guns & Crayons, Culture Fresh and more.

The post-fashion show activities will run until 2AM at 301, located just over Hooters at the corner of Fifth and Mill in Tempe. Sidebar: Whenever I give people directions to the Bobby Fresh Flagship, I say “It’s across from Hooters”, and only one person got lost. But I found that person at Hooters, so it’s all good.

Tonight, After you’ve marched with Al Sharpton, watched the Suns destroy the Spurs and eaten your fill of tortas and chimis, head on over to Philthy Phils (16th St. just north of Thomas) for Cinco de Malo. The only papers you’ll need is an ID showing that you’re 21+, a $5 bill to get in and however many bills you think you need to get your Cinco de Drinko on.

As a bonus, check out this link to Complex’s top 25 hottest Mexican women. For me, personally, it begins and ends with Ms. Salma Hayek. I’m not going to ruin the Complex list for you, but really, who’s beating Ms. Hayek?

SAVE-THE-YOUTH-CENTER-DTLAYCC-FLYER-BACK-FINAL1-

If you’ve been paying proper attention to this blog, you will know that I love movies (sidebar: if you haven’t been paying attention, GFY). If you know me in real life, you know I hate real life and would rather live in a movie. In the tradition of “Save the Youth Center” dance movies like “Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo” and “Honey” is the awesomely-named “Save the Youth Center!” on May 14. It is an honest-to-god fundraiser hosted by Farrah Franklyn (Destiny’s Child c. 2000) and featuring live dance performances and art to benefit the Downtown LA Youth and Culture Center.

I can hardly contain my excitement! What will I wear!?! “Breakin’”-era parachute pants or “Honey”-era Du-Rag and Fubu jersey? Will we fill the comically large fundraising thermometer in time to stop the evil developer’s bulldozers? Will the ethnically ambiguous heroine Jessica Alba realize that the Hollywood douchebag she’s seeing could never make her as happy as a regular joe like me would?
